BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College men’s and women’s cross country teams travel this week to compete in the NJCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.

The Eastern Florida State College men’s cross country team will compete for a national title on Saturday in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The Titans will compete in the NJCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country Championships at Lakeside Golf Course in Iowa on Saturday.

Eastern Florida State Colege qualified after a fifth-place finish at the FCSAA Championships in Tallahassee.

“I want a better outcome from our guys than we had in Regional meet,” Eastern Florida State College men’s cross country coach Doug Butler said. “We tapered this week after some good practices, I am excited to see what we can do.”

Freshman Jaiden McKee is coming off a season-best run at the championships, finishing in 27 minutes and 16.4 seconds. Teammate Morgan Vici also had one if his better finishes at the championships with his run of 28:17.7 and will be running his final 8K as a Titan.

“Jaiden is more confident, he didn’t have a superb race but he had a good race and knows he can go faster,” Butler said. “They are all pretty healthy, so there is no reason they can’t run better and put together a good day.”

It will be the fourth straight season that the Titans will be running in the national championships and first year competing in the NJCAA Division II race.

The Eastern Florida State College women’s cross country team will compete in the NJCAA Division II Cross Country Championships Saturday in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The Titans are coming off a solid third-place showing in the FCSAA Championships and look to be even better at the Lakeside Golf Course in Iowa on Saturday.

“I am shooting for a top 15 finish for the ladies, I think they can do that,” Eastern Florida State College women’s cross country coach Doug Butler said.

Sophomore Rori Pandolfini leads a talented group of experienced runners as Pandolfini finished 10th overall in the FCSAA Division II Championships with a season-best time of 20 minutes, 34.7 seconds. She believes she can do even better in the national championships.

“I think I did pretty good last year in the race and getting to run in a new environment is exciting,” Pandolfini said. “We have all gotten better throughout the season and we see what we are capable of. I hope I can break 20 minutes, I think I can do so much better and I believe I can get into the 19s.”

Malinda Underwood finished the 5K race in 21 minutes while Maddison Lusk was 22nd at 21:50.7 while Aubrey Orcutt (21:56.6) and Ember Michaels (21:59.5) right behind them.

“It has been a very dedicated group as far as working. Overall, the whole group has been phenomenal,” Butler said. “The big thing this week, you have to sleep. If you can’t get nine hours of sleep this week it isn’t enough. Proper rest is really key.”

The women’s team is looking to beat its best finish of 15th place, which they accomplished two seasons ago. It will be the fourth straight season that the Titans will be running in the national championships and the first year competing in the NJCAA Division II race.

Blake Hodges shot 3-under 69 to finish the tournament 1-over and tie for second place overall. Hodges shot 1-under on the front nine and 2-under on the back nine, finishing with five birdies and two bogeys in the round.

Teammate Sean Jacoby also shot under par in the final round, shooting 1-under 71 to finish tied for seventh overall. He would birdie 17 and 18 to finish the round strong after starting with a birdie and a couple of bogeys.

Eastern Florida State College will now turn their attention to the spring championship season.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College men’s soccer team capped off a strong postseason run, advancing to the Region 8 Tournament Final after defeating Miami Dade College 2-1 in double overtime.

However, their bid for back-to-back championships ended with a 2-1 loss to No. 3 Daytona State College in the final on Saturday night.

Against Miami Dade, the No. 7 Titans battled through a tense semifinal that was decided in the second overtime.

Joao Victor Loureiro centered a ball that led to a rebound off the Miami Dade goalkeeper, allowing Tarik Ferraz Freire to send home the game-winner, his second of the season, and propel the Titans to the championship match.

Jacopo Caprile also scored for the Titans, tying the game just before halftime after Mario Bardi had given the Sharks a first-half lead.

In the final, the Titans struck first when Alvin Ssekamate intercepted a pass and set up Loureiro, who headed the ball into the net just over a minute into the second half.

Daytona State quickly responded with goals from Ashenafi Jarre and Daniel Adzah to take a 2-1 lead. Despite several late chances, the Titans were unable to equalize, as Daytona goalkeeper Matthew McCall made key saves down the stretch.

Eastern Florida State finished the season 11-3-1 and as Region 8 runner-up for the first time in program history. The Titans will now wait to see if they earn an at-large berth to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, which begins November 16 at Daytona State College.

It would once again get close as USC Salkehatchie hit some big 3-pointers but an 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter was the difference.

Bruna DaSilva and Santacruz each scored 13 points in the win while Ofir Parpara finished with 12 and Mirkovic had 10.

The Titans went on to play Chatahoochee Valley Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday in Jacksonville.

The Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball team tipped off the regular season Friday at Indian River State College.

The Titans are starting a new era as Zach Ferrell takes over the program from Thomas Gray who led Eastern Florida State College to a 23-7 record last season.

Eastern Florida State College will have a new look this season as Joviel Acevedo-Arroyo is the only returning player that played last season, averaging 5.2 points in 28 games. The team does have three players coming in as transfers from other colleges that bring experience to the squad.

“I am really excited, we have a great group of kids. A lot of talent, they have just been a blast to coach and really thankful for them,” Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball coach Zach Ferrell said. “We are really young and a lot are new to college basketball so we have a lot of learning to do but we had a great preseason for that, we grew a lot and learned and I am excited to be heading into the first game.”

Indian River State College also has plenty of new faces after a 10-20 season and, like the Titans, has one player back that played last season. Brandon Noythanongsay averaged 4.5 points in 27 games last season for The River.

“We get to open up against a really good NJCAA Division I team that we will get to see multiple times this season and is not too far away,” Ferrell said. “They are much improved, have heard a lot of good things about them. They are very talented and much improved. It will be a great first test for us to open up the year. It will give us a good gauge on where we are at.”

Friday’s season opener tipped off at 5 p.m. at Indian River State College. Fans can watch the game live online on hudl.

The Titans will be home November 14 and 15 for the Eastern Florida Classic.

The Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball team picked up a win in the season opener at Indian River State College Friday evening.

The Titans went on a couple of big runs to defeat The River 97-80 in a non-conference match between the Citrus Conference foes.

“I am so excited for our guys to be able to start off the year with a win at a conference opponent. I loved the response from our guys on some of their runs and we did a lot of great things, it was a great start for us to the year and heading into Idaho,” said Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball coach Zach Ferrell who picked up his first win at Eastern Florida State College. “There were definitely some nerves today, I am excited but to be able to get that first win today feels great.”

The Titans took the lead three minutes into the contest on back-to-back dunks from Lana Agbelese gave the Titans a 6-3 lead. It remained close until the final eight minutes of the contest when the Titans finished the half with an 18-0 run. Sean Register led the attack with 15 points in the first half.

“Sean is going to be a huge part of this team, he missed some of the preseason and I am thankful to have him back at full strength for the opener,” Ferrell said. “He was great for us defensively, on the glass and scoring the ball, he is a huge asset.”

Eastern Florida State College started the second half leading 45-24 but Indian River State College took advantage of the Titans slow start to cut the lead to 10, 49-39 in the first five minutes of the second half.

Djiby Ly started the run for Eastern Florida State College with a 3-pointer, then Joviel Acevedo-Arroyo hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to 74-51. He would hit another 3-pointer later in the half and finished with 21 points.

“Joviel is in his third year with us, he has worked really hard and deserves this. He has had three coaches now in his three years and I am really proud of him,” Ferrell said.

Register finished with team-high 23 points in the win while Ly had 22 and Tyson Wilson had 10 points.

Eastern Florida State College will go to Twin Falls, Idaho for the Battle of the Boot. The Titans will play McCook Community College on Thursday.
