Florida Tech's Ronning Orr Earns Defensive Player of the Week
Freshman goalkeeper Elias Ronning Orn from Florida Tech men’s soccer has been named the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and his career. He was a huge reason the Panthers went 1-0-1 against Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern.

BREVARD • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Freshman goalkeeper Elias Ronning Orn from Florida Tech men’s soccer has been named the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and his career.

He was a huge reason the Panthers went 1-0-1 against Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern.

Orn was tabbed SSC Defensive Player of the Week at the end of September making this his second career SSC weekly honor.

The Randaberg, Norway native totaled 11 saves, many of which came early in the game keeping Tech alive. In the first game against Nova Southeastern, Orn tallied three almost back-to-back-to-back saves before the eight-minute mark. This allowed for the Panther offense to find their groove and take the 1-0 lead in minute 15′. He would end the game with five total saves in a 1-1 tie.

Déjà vu hit in a 2-1 victory at Florida Southern when the Mocs fired three shots on goal within a two-minute span before minute 13′. Orn made all three saves and went on to make the second-most in a single game this season with six.

The win in Lakeland over Florida Southern marked Tech’s first win at Berend Field since a 4-0 route on October 3, 2018.

Tech heads to Winter Park to play a non-conference match-up against Rollins on Wednesday, October 22, at 6 P.M. ET.

The Florida Tech women’s soccer team stuns Rollins with a 3-2 victory with three goals in the final five minutes of play on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The Panthers improve to 4-1-2 (1-0-1 SSC) while the Tars are now 4-2-0 (0-1-0 SSC)

WINTER PARK, FLORIDA – The Florida Tech women’s soccer team stuns Rollins with a 3-2 victory with three goals in the final five minutes of play on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The Panthers improve to 4-1-2 (1-0-1 SSC) while the Tars are now 4-2-0 (0-1-0 SSC)

Florida Tech wasted no time applying early pressure. Within the first five minutes, Katie Ormerod and Ellinor Blaasternes each fired shots toward the Rollins net, showing the Panthers’ agression. But it was the Tars who struck first. In the ninth minute, Rollins capitalized on a defensive lapse, slotting a precise shot into the top left corner to take a 1-0 lead.

The home side continued to press, dominating possession with a flurry of corner kicks between the 15′ and 18′ minutes. Their persistence paid off moments later when they netted a second goal in the 19′ minute, putting the Panthers in a 2-0 hole before the first half ended.

Florida Tech searched for a way back into the game, but attempts in the 19′ and 23′ minutes went astray. A surge of activity between the 31′ and 34′ minutes brought two shots and three corners for Tech, but the only attempt on goal was turned away by the Tars’ keeper. Meanwhile, the Panthers’ defense held strong, fending off two corners in the 36′ minute. Goalkeeper Kaitlin Sinkler came up big with two critical saves in the 37′ and 40′ minutes to keep her team within striking distance heading into halftime.

After the break, Florida Tech tried to claw their way back. Shots by Sara Batchadji in the 49′ and Ada Geier in the 54′ minute looked promising, but once again, the Rollins keeper denied them.

Time ticked away, and it seemed the Tars might coast to victory. But the 85′ minute sparked a wild turn of events. Rebecca Storr stepped up and launched a shot from just outside the box, beating the keeper and giving the Panthers their first goal of the match. The momentum swung instantly.

Just two minutes later, a Rollins foul near the box gave Florida Tech a golden opportunity. Batchadji took full advantage, curling a beautiful lofted shot over the goalkeeper to tie the game 2-2 in the 87′ minute.

The Tars barely had time to regroup before Storr struck again. With less than a minute elapsed from the equalizer, Storr surged forward from midfield and unleashed a rocket into the back of the net — her second goal in just three minutes — giving Florida Tech a stunning 3-2 lead in the 88′ minute.

The Panthers held firm in the final moments, sealing the comeback and snapping a 21-year drought since their last win after trailing by two goals — a 3-2 overtime thriller over Embry-Riddle back in 2004.

Beyond the Boxscore:

• Rebecca Storr’s pair of late goals were her first and second of the season, coming at the perfect time.

• Sara Batchadji’s equalizer marked her second goal of the year.

• Kaitlin Sinkler tallied six saves, her second-highest total in a match this season.

• Florida Tech outshot Rollins 17-15 in a hard-fought battle.

Up Next: The Panthers look to carry their momentum into a high-stakes showdown as they wrap up their road trip against No. 19 Embry-Riddle on Saturday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.

The Panthers’ first-ever college football team will debut in the fall. As Florida Tech’s number and variety of sports teams has grown over the years, interacting and building relationships with the student-athletes has taken on added significance for Jurgens. “I always give them advice. BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The long association of Bill Jurgens and athletics at Florida Institute of Technology may best be remembered for a career spanning 44 years and counting, but that would overlook his storied success as a coach, administrator and a role model for generations of students.

A resident of Melbourne since he was in third grade, Jurgens never dreamed growing up that he would one day lead a college athletic program or champion Florida Tech’s fortunes on and off the playing field for nearly six decades.

It has earned him induction into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame as the 2013 Sports Visionary Award recipient.

A 1964 graduate of Melbourne High School, Jurgens attended Jacksonville University and majored in biology. He also competed in rowing for four years and became captain of the school’s team as a senior.

After graduation, Jurgens took a job at Arlington Junior High School in Jacksonville to teach biology. Within a week his principal moved him to physical education where he also served as JV basketball coach and assistant track coach.

At the end of the year, he received a grant to attend the University of Florida to teach biology to students of diverse backgrounds. He returned to Melbourne in the fall of 1969 and was hired by Florida Tech on a part-time basis to coach the rowing team. At the same time, the principal at Eau Gallie Junior High School was impressed by Bill’s work with diverse students at UF and hired him to teach special needs students.

GUIDING & STEADYING FORCE

As Florida Tech rowing coach, the team won its first five races and even defeated arch-rival Rollins College. By the following fall, Jurgens became a full-time coach at Florida Tech. In 1976 he became the school’s athletic director.

He applied for the position because, as he put it, “I wanted a broad-based program. It never occurred to me that having many teams means more work. I thought our athletes could benefit from a positive spirit and not get caught up in what we didn’t have. My goal was to help all of our sports succeed.”

Besides fulfilling his duties as athletic director, Bill continued to coach Florida Tech rowers. Serving 20 years as the team’s coach, he led the squad to the state title in 1974, and in 1975 FIT claimed its first national championship.

In all, Jurgens led the Panthers to 20 NCAA team and individual titles until stepping down in 1988. With his coaching days behind him, Jurgens poured his heart and soul into developing a level of excellence for the athletic department. FIT programs flourished with the men’s soccer team winning NCAA Division II championships in 1988 and again in 1991.

“Vince Lombardi is often misquoted about saying ‘winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing,’ when what he really said was, ‘winning isn’t everything. The will to win is the only thing,’” Jurgens said.

“I consider success to be when you have people who don’t worry about a loss, but keep the desire to win.”

As Florida Tech’s number and variety of sports teams has grown over the years, interacting and building relationships with the student-athletes has taken on added significance for Jurgens. “I always give them advice. They may not ask, but I give it to them,” he said. “I try to set myself in a position to help people.”

MENTOR TO GENERATIONS OF ATHLETES

Jurgens encourages FIT athletes to get involved in the community in service-oriented endeavors and programs, such as working with handicapped children or volunteering in a food pantry.

The FIT athletic department has expanded under his watch to include 22 sports and hundreds of student-athletes. The Panthers’ first-ever college football team will debut in the fall.

“I know I’ve done my job when I see them graduate and they see what they’ve become. They see what they achieved and they are more prepared and more successful and more able to deal with the ups and downs,” Jurgens said.

“It impresses me that we create that environment and I’m confident in the product that we have and nothing prevents us from being the best we could be.”

Jurgens, who is a member of the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame and the Jacksonville University Athletic Hall of Fame, has indeed been the right man for the job at Florida Tech, and his vision for athletics at the school has created a model program that others try to emulate.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Florida Tech gold medal canoe specialist Anuar Akchurin will compete in the 2025 World Championships for team USA.

The World Championships will be held in Milan, Italy August 20-24.

The final selection round was in San Diego, where the athletes raced 500 meters against each other. Team USA canoe sprint head coach, Joe Harper, announced the results at the end of the day, and Akchurin was one second faster.

This result places him in the C-2 (canoe double) with Johnathan Grady for the 500-meter event at the 2025 World Championships.

The C-2 500 meters is part of the Olympic program for LA 2028.

“This is just the beginning of the journey — thank you so much for your continued support,” said Akchurin.

Next stop, Milan, for the 2025 Canoe Sprint World Championships.

“We made Team USA!”

Originally from Kazakhstan, Akchurin discovered his love for canoeing 11 years ago after watching a competition in person with his father.

Afterward, he enrolled in a free club that taught children about the sport. Not only did he love the challenge canoeing presented, but he also enjoyed spending more time in nature.

While attending Florida Tech, Akchurin pursued his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and continued competing independently in sprint canoeing.

One day, while on the water training, Akchurin crossed paths with professor Paul Cosentino and Florida Tech’s concrete canoe team.

After striking up a conversation, Akchurin was brought on to assist the team as an expert in paddle sports.

While coaching the team, he taught the students proper paddling techniques and team-building exercises to improve overall communication.

Scholar-Athlete Spotlight: Domantas Marocka

Being a scholar-athlete at Florida Tech takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to excel both in the classroom and on the field.

We caught up with Panther men’s rower Domantas Marocka, a senior who is majoring in Civil Engineering, for this edition of Scholar-Athlete Spotlight. Making the journey to Melbourne from Vilnius, Lithuania, Marocka has been a consistent presence in the Panther boat throughout his career. This past spring, he helped lead the Varsity 8 to victory at the FIRA Regatta and a third-place finish at SIRA Regatta and AARC Sprints. His top performance as a Crimson and Gray rower came in May 2022, when he was a member of the Heavyweight 4 that won the Grand Final at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, their first win in that event in nine years.

Following the 2021-22 season, Domantas was named to the Florida Tech Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Before the Panthers made the trip to Massachusetts to compete in tomorrow’s Head of the Charles Regatta, we talked with Domantas about how he’s made it all work.

Tell us a little bit about your major, what made you choose it and what do you want to do with it?
I’m majoring in Civil Engineering here at Florida Tech and ever since I was a kid, I was always interested in being on construction sites. I even spent some summers working on construction sites for my dad’s friend and it made me interested in this industry and I really liked being there, get that hands-on experience, and I thought that in my future I could do that in more office-related work.

Growing up in Lithuania, what was it about Florida Tech that made you want to be here?
I sent a lot of emails for my future universities and Florida Tech was one of those who really cared about me, especially the coach [at the time], and obviously the weather here is unlike Lithuania. In Lithuania in the winters, we don’t have good weather and we cannot be on the water, while here we can always be on the water and it’s a big advantage.
Obviously, the academics here are the highest priority because if you want to be a student that is a competitive scholar-athlete, you have to get involved in the academics and athletics and you have to be successful in both in the classroom and on the water.

What’s something you’ve learned at Florida Tech about your field that you didn’t know before?
One of the main things I learned after coming here is that civil engineering has different parts of engineering, like geotechnical or transportation engineering. I think I’m gonna be really interested in some of those and get involved in future workplaces, for those types of engineering.

How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for what you’re doing now and are there lessons from rowing that you apply to your studies?

Oh yeah, definitely discipline because waking up at 5:30 [A.M.] every single day, it gets really challenging and when you get in the real world situations, you will rely on that discipline and it will definitely help you in your future career and pursuits.

What advice would you give to an athlete coming to Florida Tech that has an interest in Civil Engineering?
My main advice for incoming freshmen athletes in civil engineering would be to responsibly, schedule your classes when the registering time comes up, because with all those brutal practice schedules, it’s gonna be really challenging to complete that and it’s really important not to take 8:00 A.M. [classes] in the mornings because the schedule is really tight. You do practice in the morning, you must eat breakfast, you have to shower and then you have to get ready for class and go to class the whole day. So, it’s extremely important to make your own class schedule that fits exactly into your day.

What’s something you’ve done in the classroom that you’re most proud of?
One of my main projects we’re working right now is the Senior Design project. It is about affordable housing for veterans, and I am taking a transportation engineering role in that project, which is gonna be really important towards the process of the project. We’re looking for good areas here in town to make that project really happen.

(FOX NEWS) – Israeli Defense Forces launched a sweeping strike on Iran following months of attempted, and seemingly failed, nuclear negotiations between the Trump administration and Tehran.

Fox News’ Trey Yingst reported that Israel carried out strikes in Iran, adding that explosions were heard in the capital of Tehran.

A state of emergency has been declared across Israel as the country braces for an Iranian response.

The strikes came after Israel first threatened to go after Iran’s nuclear facilities in early November following a series of back-and-forth missile attacks between April and October last year.

Direct engagement between Israel and Iran began after Tehran in April 2024 levied its first ever direct strikes against Israeli territory. Israel responded less than a week later and destroyed part of Iran’s S-300 long-range air defense system.

WAKEFIELD'S profound legacy endures

WATCH: Known for his signature knuckleball and unwavering dedication to service, former MLB pitcher Tim Wakefield was remembered Saturday evening by the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame not just as a baseball icon but as a man whose life reflected purpose, humility, and generosity. Tim and Stacy Wakefield were the embodiment of love in action—genuine, generous, and deeply committed to their community. Sadly, Tim passed away in 2023 at the age of 57. Stacy followed him the next year. Yet their profound legacy endures.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Known for his signature knuckleball and unwavering dedication to service, Brevard native and former MLB pitcher Tim Wakefield was remembered Saturday evening by the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame not just as a baseball icon but as a man whose life reflected purpose, humility, and generosity.

Wakefield made national headlines in the early 1990s with the Pittsburgh Pirates, earning the title of Pitcher of the Year after securing two complete-game victories in the National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves, bringing the Pirates within reach of a World Series appearance.

But even during the heights of his early success, Wakefield understood there was more to life than baseball. He quickly used his rising fame to support longtime friend Betsy Farmer, who had founded the Space Coast Early Intervention Center, a preschool for children with special needs.

Thanks to Wakefield’s generosity and broad network of connections, he and his wife Stacy supported the organization—now known as Space Coast Discovery—for more than 25 years.

In 1993, Wakefield’s career faced a setback when he lost command of his signature pitch. He was sent down to the minors and eventually designated for assignment in 1994. What would have been a devastating blow to most players became a turning point for Wakefield.

Just six days later, he was signed by the Boston Red Sox and trained that offseason with legendary knuckleballer Phil Niekro.

In 1995, with Boston’s pitching staff plagued by injuries, Wakefield was called up from Triple-A in late May. He stunned fans and opponents alike, going 14-1 with a 1.65 ERA in his first 17 starts. He helped lead the Red Sox to an AL East division title and earned American League Comeback Player of the Year honors.

Tim and Stacy Wakefield were the embodiment of love in action—genuine, generous, and deeply committed to their community. Sadly, Tim passed away in 2023 at the age of 57. Stacy followed him the next year. Yet their profound legacy endures.

Wakefield quickly became a beloved figure in Boston, not just for his performance on the mound but also for his deep commitment to the community. He partnered with the Franciscan Hospital for Children and was active in organizations like “Pitching In for Kids” and “Touch ‘Em All.” In 2013, he was named honorary chairman of the Red Sox Foundation.

A devout Christian since 1990, Wakefield met the love of his life, Stacy, in Boston. The couple married in 2002 and had two children. Though they loved their adopted city, they returned to their cherished home on Florida’s Space Coast each year.

Wakefield retired from baseball in 2012, concluding a remarkable 19-year MLB career with 200 wins, third-most in Red Sox history, behind only Roger Clemens and Cy Young.

Throughout his career and life, Wakefield remained even-keeled and purpose-driven. He believed that those blessed with success had a duty to serve others. Whether comforting a parent of a child with special needs or sitting quietly with a child on his lap, his compassion was ever-present.

Tim and Stacy Wakefield were the embodiment of love in action—genuine, generous, and deeply committed to their community. Sadly, Tim passed away in 2023 at the age of 57. Stacy followed him the next year. Yet their profound legacy endures.

On Opening Day 2024, Fenway Park hosted a celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the Red Sox’s 2004 World Championship. The pregame ceremony was dedicated to the Wakefields. Their children, Brianna and Trevor, led the championship team onto the field. Brianna threw the ceremonial first pitch in a profoundly moving tribute.

The emotional gathering highlighted the many relationships Wakefield had built during his life. His teammates, friends, and fans remembered him not for his fame or statistics, but for his service, his relationships, and his love.

“Tonight, we offer Special Recognition to Tim Wakefield, a proud member of the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame’s inaugural class of 2012,” said Tom Palermo, president and publisher of Space Coast Daily.  “We honor not just his accomplishments in baseball, but the remarkable life he lived beyond the game.”

HUMANITARIAN: Throughout his career and life, Tim Wakefield, above left with Dr. Larry Bishop, remained even-keeled and purpose-driven. He believed that those blessed with success had a duty to serve others. Whether comforting a parent of a child with special needs or sitting quietly with a child on his lap, his compassion was ever-present.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA– The Florida Tech softball program earned three spots on an All-Sunshine State Conference Team and saw three freshmen make the All-SSC Second Team.

Chloe Fariello, a utility/pitcher, Malaya Nelson as an outfielder, and Haley Rider as a designated player were all named to the All-SSC Second Team. Being a freshman, it is their first All-SSC selection of their young careers.

It is also the first time in the program’s history that three freshmen have made the All-Conference Team.

This season, Fariello played incredibly at three different positions: first base, left field, and pitcher. She gave the conference no choice but to name her to the All-SSC Second Team for the utility/pitcher position.

The Lake Worth native started all 51 games for the Panthers, compiling a .311 batting average, 31 runs, four doubles, two triples, 17 RBI, 20 walks, and her first career home run.

Fariello was also a menace on the base paths, going 23-for-24 on steal attempts, making the top 10 in the conference. From the circle, she appeared 17 times and started 11 games, finishing 2025 with five complete games, two shutouts, two saves, and 34 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched.

She was also named SSC pitcher of the Week after a 1-0 shutout performance against No. 3 Tampa. In the field, Fariello tallied 133 putouts, 25 assists in 166 chances for a .952 fielding percentage.

Nelson sparked many Panther runs from the bottom of the lineup, stroking a .338 overall batting average and a stellar .375 in conference play. The freshman also recorded 23 runs, four doubles, two home runs, 23 RBI, and 11 steals in 48 starts.

Nelson compiled 11 multi-hit games, including three 3-for-3 games. As an outfielder, the Snohomish, Washington native held a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in her 55 chances, tallying 53 putouts and two assists.

Rider was not only one of the best freshmen in the SSC but also one of the best players during the 2025 season. The Viera native led the Panthers with a .378 batting average, four triples, a .597 slugging percentage, and a .432 on-base percentage in 40 starts.

Her batting average was seventh in the SSC and second in slugging. She also recorded 17 runs, six doubles, four home runs, and 22 RBI. Rider’s 1.029 OPS is the fourth highest in a season in program history, and it made her the first freshman and fifth Panther to have an OPS above 1.000.
