BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA – As East Central Florida continues cleaning up after a weekend of widespread flooding, eyes are now turning to the tropics as Hurricane Melissa strengthens in the Caribbean.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the storm held maximum sustained winds of 125 mph as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, moving north-northeast at 8 mph.

While Melissa currently poses no immediate threat to Florida, forecasters are keeping a close watch on its projected path over the coming days.

The seven-day tropical outlook shows no other active systems, but local emergency management officials urge residents to remain weather-aware as the hurricane season continues.

In Brevard and neighboring counties, crews are still working to clear storm debris and restore roadways following recent flooding, reminding residents to keep debris piles separate and away from trees and power lines.

Officials emphasize that staying informed through reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center and Brevard County Emergency Management remains essential for community safety.
