Brevard County Remains Under Flood Watch After Torrential Overnight Rainfall
Heavy overnight rain left parts of the Space Coast underwater Monday morning, prompting a flood watch and widespread reports of waterlogged roads, stalled vehicles, and flooded homes.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, as much as 14 inches of rain fell in some northern areas of the county — particularly Titusville and North Merritt Island — within just six hours late Sunday.
A flash flood warning was first issued around 4:40 p.m. Sunday, and the storm continued through about 10 p.m., inundating low-lying areas and overwhelming drainage systems.
The flood watch remained in effect through 8 p.m. Monday as additional showers were forecast.
Emergency crews in Titusville responded to multiple calls Sunday evening related to stranded motorists and water entering homes.
Photos shared online showed streets transformed into rivers and a Brevard County Fire Rescue vehicle partially submerged in floodwater.
Despite the challenging conditions, Brevard Public Schools announced early Monday that all campuses would remain open. The district acknowledged that some families may be unable to travel safely and said absences related to flooding would be excused.
The National Weather Service urged residents to remain cautious.
With saturated ground and drainage systems still recovering, officials urged residents to use extreme caution while traveling and to avoid unnecessary trips through flood-prone zones.
