(NASA) –Using the most advanced Earth-observing laser instrument NASA has ever flown in space, scientists have made precise, detailed measurements of how the elevation of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have changed over 16 years.

The results provide insights into how the polar ice sheets are changing, demonstrating definitively that small gains of ice in East Antarctica are dwarfed by massive losses in West Antarctica.

The scientists found the net loss of ice from Antarctica, along with Greenland’s shrinking ice sheet, has been responsible for 0.55 inches (14 millimeters) of sea level rise between 2003 and 2019 – slightly less than a third of the total amount of sea level rise observed in the world’s oceans.

The findings come from NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2), which launched in 2018 to make detailed global elevation measurements, including over Earth’s frozen regions.

By comparing the recent data with measurements taken by the original ICESat from 2003 to 2009, researchers have generated a comprehensive portrait of the complexities of ice sheet change and insights about the future of Greenland and Antarctica.

The study found that Greenland’s ice sheet lost an average of 200 gigatons of ice per year, and Antarctica’s ice sheet lost an average of 118 gigatons of ice per year.

One gigaton of ice is enough to fill 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools or cover New York’s Central Park in ice more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) thick, reaching higher than the Chrysler Building.

“If you watch a glacier or ice sheet for a month, or a year, you’re not going to learn much about what the climate is doing to it,” said Ben Smith, a glaciologist at the University of Washington and lead author of the new paper, published online in Science April 30.

“We now have a 16-year span between ICESat and ICESat-2 and can be much more confident that the changes we’re seeing in the ice have to do with the long-term changes in the climate.”

ICESat-2’s instrument is a laser altimeter, which sends 10,000 pulses of light a second down to Earth’s surface, and times how long it takes to return to the satellite – to within a billionth of a second.

The instrument’s pulse rate allows for a dense map of measurement over the ice sheet; its high precision allows scientists to determine how much an ice sheet changes over a year to within an inch.

The researchers took tracks of earlier ICESat measurements and overlaid the tracks of ICESat-2 measurements from 2019, and took data from the tens of millions of sites where the two data sets intersected.

That gave them the elevation change, but to get to how much ice has been lost, the researchers developed a new model to convert volume change to mass change. The model calculated densities across the ice sheets to allow the total mass loss to be calculated.

“These first results looking at land ice confirm the consensus from other research groups, but they also let us look at the details of change in individual glaciers and ice shelves at the same time,” said Tom Neumann, ICESat-2 project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

In Antarctica, for example, the detailed measurements showed that the ice sheet is getting thicker in parts of the continent’s interior as a result of increased snowfall, according to the study.

But the loss of ice from the continent’s margins, especially in West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula, far outweighs any gains in the interior. In those places, the loss is due to warming from the ocean.

In Greenland, there was a significant amount of thinning of coastal glaciers, Smith said. The Kangerlussuaq and Jakobshavn glaciers, for example, have lost 14 to 20 ft (4 to 6 m) of elevation per year; the glacial basins have lost 16 gigatons per year and 22 gigatons per year, respectively.

Warmer summer temperatures have melted ice from the surface of the glaciers and ice sheets, and in some basins the warmer ocean water erodes away the ice at their fronts.

“The new analysis reveals the ice sheets’ response to changes in climate with unprecedented detail, revealing clues as to why and how the ice sheets are reacting the way they are,” said Alex Gardner, a glaciologist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, and co-author on the Science paper.

Using data from the ICESat and ICESat-2 laser altimeters, scientists precisely measured how much ice has been lost from ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland between 2003 and 2019. The Antarctic Peninsula, seen here, was one of the fastest changing regions of the continent. (NASA image)

The study also examined ice shelves – the floating masses of ice at the downstream end of glaciers. These ice shelves, which rise and fall with the tides, can be difficult to measure, said Helen Amanda Fricker, a glaciologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, and co-author on the Science paper.

Some of them have rough surfaces, with crevasses and ridges, but the precision and high resolution of ICESat-2 allows researchers to measure overall changes.

This is one of the first times that researchers have used laser altimetry to measure loss of the floating ice shelves around Antarctica simultaneously with loss of the continent’s ice sheet.

The researchers found ice shelves are losing mass in West Antarctica, where many of the continent’s fastest-moving glaciers are located as well. Patterns of thinning over the ice shelves in West Antarctica show that Thwaites and Crosson ice shelves have thinned the most, an average of about 16 ft (5 m) and 10 ft (3 m) of ice per year, respectively.

Ice that melts from ice shelves doesn’t raise sea levels, since it’s already floating – just like an ice cube already in a full cup of water doesn’t overflow the glass when it melts. But the ice shelves do provide stability for the glaciers and ice sheets behind them.

“It’s like an architectural buttress that holds up a cathedral,” Fricker said. “The ice shelves hold the ice sheet up. If you take away the ice shelves, or even if you thin them, you’re reducing that buttressing force, so the grounded ice can flow faster.”

BREVARD COUNTY • PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE  – The Military Officers Association of America’ Cape Canaveral Chapter’s (MOAACC) Good Deeds Foundation was created in 2014 and established as a separate non=profit organization the following year.

The Good Deeds Foundation relies on donations from MOAACC members; contributions from local businesses and others in the community; and the annual GDF golf tournament, to support its many programs benefiting active duty military, veterans, and military-related youth communities in Brevard County.

To name just a few activities from this past year, the GDF hosted a sent a volunteer to Texas for training to provide better support to the Brevard Veteran Treatment Court; supported a Memorial Day Ceremony at the new Cape Canaveral National Cemetery that was attended by over 1000 people; and provided financial and volunteer support to the Missing in America Project-FL.

For the first time in this area, 21 veterans and one veteran spouse whose cremated remains had been abandoned at funeral homes (in several cases for decades) were given a solemn burial with full military honors.

These ceremonies were performed at no cost to any surviving family members. This past fall the GDF distributed over $7,000 in checks to 20 high school JROTC units, Sea Cadet Divisions, and Civil Air Patrol Squadrons throughout Brevard County to support their activities during the 2018-2019 school year.

The checks were presented in classrooms, at auditorium ceremonies, in a museum, and at two football games with over 1600 fans in the stands. During the holiday season, the GDF supported the Brevard USO in their effort to stage stocking stuffer events for the children of junior enlisted personnel.

They provided $6,000 to the Patrick Air force Base First Sergeant’s Council Operation “Warm Heart”, which helps kids whose parents are in junior active duty ranks with parties, stockings, and emergency family travel.

They also provided funding to the charitable efforts of the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute on PAFB, and the Base’s security dog handlers who reach out to provide toys and clothing for homeless or needy veteran families.

You're In Charge...Play It Smart

ABOVE VIDEO: Before you begin running with your dog on a regular basis, consider your dog’s health, the environment where you’ll be running, and your dog’s obedience training.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDAYour dog’s love for you, and of running, may be unconditional. It will run with you in all sorts of conditions, almost always eager and never complaining.

You’re In Charge…Play It Smart

However, you are the master – or alpha person – in its life and are responsible to make critical decisions when it affects your dog’s health.

The weather, terrain, environment, distance and your best friend’s condition are all factors to take into consideration. Here are some tips on how to keep your canine jogger happy and comfortable during his or her running years:

exercise
Retrievers are good endurance dogs.

• Know, understand and be sensitive to your dog’s limits and athletic ability. Not every dog is an endurance runner. Although greyhounds appear to be distance athletes, they are built for sprints and are not endurance dogs; neither are toy poodles.

Labs are usually one of the best endurance dogs. While the larger dogs will have an easier time keeping up, some of the smaller herding breeds, such as the Corgi or Sheltie, do very well running or hiking distances.

• Just as you would with your own running program, start your dog out gradually. Begin a training regime by running or walking your dog around your neighborhood, increasing the distance as you and your dog become conditioned.

Puppies should not be run on hard surfaces until after 14 months of age, when their growth plates close.
Puppies should not be run on hard surfaces until after 14 months of age, when their growth plates close.

• A dog can start running at any age; however, if you can start with a puppy, it will have an easier time with the training. Puppies should not be run on hard surfaces until after 14 months of age, when their growth plates close. Puppies younger should be run shorter distances on soft ground or walked.

• Nutrition is another consideration in training your dog, and a complete and balanced diet will allow your dog to keep its energy up during a run. Try to avoid running immediately after a big meal, and make sure your dog is rested and cooled down from a run before feeding it.

• With the “dog” days of summer ahead, be vigilant and run exclusively during the early morning or early evening hours when temperatures are usually at their coolest.

Be aware that in the early evening hours the pavement is still very hot and makes your dog’s running environment much hotter than yours because the majority of their bodies are close to the ground.

bb
Teach your dog how to drink from a water bottle or some sort of drinking container.

• Carry enough water for you and the dog(s), or run in areas where water is readily available. Teach your dog(s) how to drink from a water bottle or some sort of drinking container.

ALL dogs can quickly overheat, especially if they have a dark or heavy coat. Remember, dogs need more water than humans do!

• Try to run on trails which are shaded and soft. This will not only protect your dog’s joints but yours as well. The most common type of injury suffered by dogs that are running with their owners is footpad injuries.

Avoid running on hot pavement as this can easily lead to burns. Running in the woods can lead to cuts and scrapes. While these are difficult to avoid, leather boots are available for those dogs that exercise on extremely rough ground or ice and snow. If your dog sustains a footpad cut or scrape, proper first aid care should be administered immediately.

running with dogshutterstock_119392225
Keep your dog on a short lead (4 to 6 feet) and under control at all times.

• Keep your dog on a short lead (4 to 6 feet) and under control at all times. This will help your dog avoid trouble and out of the path of others.

Good obedience training builds a solid foundation for the control necessary to run with your dog, but the best-trained dog can go astray. If it happens to see some furry creature cross in front of it, your best friend may become a victim. It happens all the time!

• Your dog relies on you to readily recognize the signs of fatigue or heat illness. If your dog starts to lag behind during the run, slow down and wait. It may even be necessary to cut your run short and walk if it continues to lag behind.

Be very aware of signs of heatstroke or illness: panting, mouth open and gasping for air, white foaming at the mouth, distressed, often unable to stand, movement uncontrolled and agitated, and gums that are deep red. The chest or abdominal area (groin area of its hindquarters) may be blotchy-red.

bulldog-on-ice
A dog with signs of overheating must be immediately cooled down.

If your dog shows any of these signs, cool the dog immediately by thoroughly wetting with cold water and, if available, placing it in front of a fan in a shaded area. It is important not to force feed your dog water, it will drink when ready.

If your dog should start to vomit, or show no improvement within 10 minutes, seek veterinary help as quickly as possible.

Heatstroke can lead to coma, brain damage and death. Always remember that dogs do not have sweat glands as we do, and they can only regulate their body temperature by panting.

If you use a muzzle, make sure it can pant, and avoid the velcro kind that does not allow panting.

• Be sensitive to any change in your dog’s gait. Lameness can be something as simple as muscle soreness which is gone in one to two days or as complex as arthritis which will continue to worsen as the dog ages.

If lameness persists, it is important to visit your local veterinarian to determine the cause of the lameness and your dog’s ability to continue exercising.

Using common sense when running with your dog will make it an activity that can be enjoyed safely for a long time. For more information contact your veterinarian.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The owners of a Cocoa business reported a burglary early Friday morning and then helped lead police to the suspects using GPS technology. A Brevard County Sheriff’s Office K-9 assisted as well.

Just after 6 a.m. Friday, Cocoa Police officers responded to the 700 block of Industry Road for a reported burglary. The owners of a construction business reported two of their pickups had been stolen.

The vehicles were equipped with GPS tracking devices and the owners assisted police with finding an approximate location in a wooded area just south of State Road 524 and east of Interstate 95.

Officers responded to the area with assistance from the Brevard County Sheriff’s helicopter and K-9 teams.

A short time later, one suspect was found and taken into custody without incident. As officers were about to call off the search for other suspects, sheriff’s K-9 “Vader,” a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, lead his handler, Deputy David Bowes, to a second suspect, identified as William Richards, who was hiding in the woods.

The investigation is ongoing.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The U.S. cannabis industry will pump up to $44 billion annually into the country’s economy by 2020 if current business and legalization trends continue, according to exclusive data released Monday in the 2016 Marijuana Business Factbook.

Published by Marijuana Business Daily, the report estimates that the industry’s annual economic impact will soar from $14 billion to $17 billion in 2016 to $24 billion to $44 billion in four years.

The projections reflect marijuana’s march toward the mainstream as it emerges from the shadows to become a respectable, above-board industry that is giving birth to scores of jobs, fostering new business opportunities and creating a broad ripple effect across the country.

“We’re witnessing the emergence of a business that is about to become a massive economic force,” Chris Walsh, managing editor of Marijuana Business Daily, said on its website.

“These figures, which we deem conservative, show not only how important the industry already is to the U.S economy at large, but also how much more important it is about to become.”

The Florida medical marijuana initiative will be on November ballot. In 2014, the measure fell just short of the 60 percent approval needed for constitutional amendments.

Only 9 of 72 Cold Stunned Turtles from Massachusetts Coast Remain

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — This morning, the SeaWorld Orlando Animal Rescue Team returned three Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, the world’s most endangered species of sea turtle, to the warm Florida waters by Canaveral National Seashore.

The three Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles returned were part of the 72 sea turtles that were rescued last November during a mass cold stranding off the Massachusetts coast.

They were transferred to SeaWorld Orlando from the New England Aquarium by the U.S. Coast Guard for rehabilitation and expert care.

Following today’s return only nine of the 72 rescued turtles remain after completing rehabilitation under the care of SeaWorld Orlando’s aquarium team and veterinarians.

The SeaWorld Team is still caring for the remainder of the turtles as they regain their strength with the goal of returning them in the coming weeks.

Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the most endangered species of sea turtle in the world, mainly due to egg collection and other human activities.

On Wednesday, under strict protection and the help of organizations like SeaWorld’s Animal Rescue Team, the population is on its way to recovery.
