YOUR VIEW: our history and landmark citizens and capitalistic system are under destructive attack

“The great majority all too often stand again as the silent majority. All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing. So, this is a call to action.”

America is at a crossroads, which means all of us are at a crossroads. This is the most divisive political environment I have experienced in my lifetime. You could easily argue that the Vietnam War divisions were worse. That seemed like a battle between young and old over the war and, dialing in a large measure of self-interest, the draft.

Lots of young people did not want to get drafted, which is understandable. And, they wrapped in a lot of altruistic arguments about the morality of the war and how Washington was conducting it. Our troops were doing their job under very tough conditions.

Washington was calling the shots. We saw bumper stickers saying, America Love It Or Leave It and returning troops were getting spit on and called baby killers in airports on their return. It was horrible. That was essentially a battle over foreign policy and its very real impact on American citizens.

Here is why I think today’s crossroads is worse. This is a battle over the heart of our governmental system. Do we believe in capitalism, or do we think socialism will be a better system? Ill winds of socialism and hating America are blowing. (Blowhards do blow. Which raised the question: do the anti-Americans suck or blow. That is a discussion for another day.)

To create, you often must first destroy. So, our history and landmark citizens and capitalistic system are under destructive attack. Cancel culture still rages. Surrender to the noisy minority herd demands or you are evil. That is not the America most of us know and love.

The great majority all too often stand again as the silent majority. All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing. So, this is a call to action.

Love capitalism. It is akin to Winston Churchill’s declaration that democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others. Socialist government kills and starves. Socialism has killed one hundred million people in its deranged search for utopia divorced from human nature.

Socialism does not create. Socialism does not make a bigger pie to be shared. The pie shrinks and the government represses and puts up walls to keep people in. It creates a paranoid culture with neighbors turning in neighbors for saying the wrong thing. Heaven help us so that terror never falls on our heads.

So, what makes capitalism so great? That calls for a book. A very large book. Let’s visit just a few examples about capitalists.

Capitalists Create. Even the haters benefit from our innovation culture. Could they organize a good riot without social media using Facebook or similar communication methods?

Try doing research without Google. Google is the most massive library ever contemplated. Facebook and Google are American capitalist companies which have made the world leap forward. Pfizer and other American capitalist drug inventors save and prolong lives. Have any relatives or friends over 90 years old?

Do any of them take medications which they could not live without? How many breakthrough drugs have Venezuela or North Korea invented in the last ten years? Capitalism does not just foster innovation. It creates a constant battle among American capitalist companies to outdo each other and deliver better, cheaper, faster products or services.

The Motorola Razr used to be the gold standard for cell phones then the Blackberry exploded with a big innovation and now Apple dominates with another capitalist country’s phone pushing it for number one.

What country invents and improves on the scale that capitalist America does? No, not that one. It pervasively steals our technology. Compare our F-35 to theirs. Looks the same, doesn’t it? Ever see the Soviet shuttle? Same thing. Socialism is risk avoidance culture where punishment is feared. Capitalism is a risk taking and rewards culture.

Capitalists Are Generous. They accrue wealth and share it. Look at the donor list at the next charity event you go to. If capitalist companies do not support these events, they do not happen. I watched a YouTube video discussion with Jordan Peterson and Dave Ramsey discussing charity and our system in general.

It led to this article because it was so inspirational. Peterson made the point very well that people that donate money are generous, because they do it by choice. You are not generous if you take other peoples’ money through taxation, because it is compelled money and not generosity money. Of course we need taxes.

The amount of taxation and government spending is the rub. The social engineers that never think taxes are high enough will never be satisfied. Tax rates are not high enough? They demand wealth taxes on the wealth people have! Resentment is really good for driving a socialist revolution.

Back to charitable impulses, I did a quick Google search to verify that conservatives donate more than liberals. Nicholas Kristof is no liberal. However, in a 2008 The Seattle Times article entitled Conservatives Are More Giving Than Liberals, he wrote this:

“Liberals show tremendous compassion in pushing for generous government spending to help the neediest people at home and abroad. Yet when it comes to individual contributions to charitable causes, liberals are cheapskates.”

In an ironic twist, what I see as the greatest engine for condemnation of America is our wealthiest most prestigious universities. Overflowing with left wing indoctrination teaching our youth that America is not great and that it must be reformed. Those universities have massive endowment funds. Where do you suppose that wealth came from? Capitalists. To fund hostility to capitalism and the historical and present greatness of America built upon capitalism.

Capitalism Creates Jobs. A job is critically important to a personal perception of value. Why are people from all parts of the globe streaming across our southern border? A better life in capitalist America for themselves and their families, safety and security, and personal pride that comes from having a job instead of scraping by without work.

Reject socialism. It kills people and their spirit. America can always improve. We always do. Embrace and argue for the value of capitalism. Defend the system that drives us the next time you hear a misguided person attacking our country and the way of life that creates limitless opportunity.

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — A new 296-unit luxury apartment complex is coming to Merritt Island, marking another significant step in the ongoing development boom in the State Road 520 corridor of Merritt Island.

The location sits across the street from the 82-acre Merritt Square mall, and just minutes from the River Fly-In condominiums, the almost completed Merritt Island Amphitheater, and the future new Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital campus, which will replace the existing Cape Canaveral Hospital—placing the new apartments squarely within one of Brevard County’s fastest-growing corridors.

The Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency recently sponsored a study to redesign the mall as a mixed-use venue that would include not only shopping, dining, and entertainment components in an outdoor setting, but also residential units.

South Carolina-based Woodfield Developments has secured more than $51 million in construction financing for the luxury apartment complex project, which will rise on Fortenberry Road near State Road 520.

Construction is already underway, and officials said completion is expected in early 2027.

Plans for the 15.1-acre site at 555 Fortenberry Road call for a series of four-story residential buildings offering modern amenities, including a resort-style swimming pool, a 24-hour fitness center, and outdoor summer kitchens with grills.

Woodfield Developments, known for its upscale multifamily communities across the Southeast, is also developing a 318-unit apartment project in Palm Bay. The company’s portfolio emphasizes luxury design and lifestyle amenities tailored for Florida’s growing professional and retiree populations.

The Merritt Island project joins several major real estate investments reshaping the region.

In September, Strada Development LLC, based in Sanford, purchased more than 130 acres near Courtenay Parkway and Crisafulli Road for $3 million. The company has applied to rezone the property to suburban residential, signaling additional large-scale housing growth on the island.

With a new hospital, entertainment venue, housing, and retail projects rising across Merritt Island, the area is one of the Space Coast’s most active real estate markets heading into the latter half of the decade.

Victory Casino Cruises Celebrates 3 Million Passengers, Has Paid Over $25 Million to Port Canaveral

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Canaveral Port Authority’s annual State of the Port address on Thursday underscored the Port’s record-setting 2025 performance and its expanding role as a regional economic powerhouse and global commerce gateway.

Speaking before an audience of nearly 250 business, government, and community leaders at Cruise Terminal 10, CEO John Murray detailed how Port Canaveral continues to thrive across all sectors — from cruise and cargo operations to recreation, real estate, and aerospace support.

“Our business growth and solid financial performance are building value that will pay dividends for years to come,” Murray said. “We’re a leader in our industry, but our continued success rests on strategic planning, continuous improvement, and sound investments in infrastructure.”

Port Canaveral posted $218 million in total revenues for Fiscal Year 2025, which ended September 30. Cruise operations once again drove the Port’s success, contributing $182 million to that total, followed by $25 million from cargo and $11 million from non-ship operations.

The Port hosted 1,038 ship calls and a record 8.6 million multi-day passenger movements — a 13 percent jump from the previous year. Murray celebrated a milestone moment in April when Port Canaveral welcomed its 100 millionth passenger movement since the launch of the Scandinavian Sea in 1982.

Cargo Growth and Infrastructure Expansion

While cruise traffic dominated headlines, cargo activity remained robust. The Port moved 6.1 million tons of goods, including three million tons of petroleum products, two million tons of aggregates, and 850,000 tons of forest products.

A new mobile harbor crane — arriving in August — tripled the Port’s heavy-lift cargo handling capacity, complementing its two existing cranes and strengthening its role in global logistics.

Beyond its maritime operations, Port Canaveral continues to anchor Central Florida’s economy. According to Murray, 27 percent of cruise passengers stay overnight in local hotels, generating an estimated 2.3 million room nights annually in Brevard County.

The surge in tourism has fueled a 200-percent increase in hotel construction in Cape Canaveral over the past decade.

“We have an increasing responsibility to drive economic value in our region,” Murray said. “Our growth is boosting the local economy with new business investments, job creation, and a growing tax base that supports local municipalities.”

Looking ahead, the Port projects $237.4 million in total revenues for Fiscal Year 2026, with cruise operations expected to expand to 18 homeported ships and nine million passenger movements across 1,083 ship calls.

To meet growing demand, the Port is embarking on a $255 million capital improvement program for the coming fiscal year — part of a five-year, $912 million investment plan. Key initiatives include:

Adding 4,500 new parking spaces through terminal garages and surface lots.

Expanding Cruise Terminals 5 and 10 to accommodate some of the world’s largest upcoming vessels.

Completing renovations at North Cargo Berth 4 to open new development opportunities.

Enhancing public boating, camping, and beach facilities that already attract 400,000 visitors annually.

“The Port has been part of the local community for more than 70 years and has contributed significantly to the region’s growth,” Murray said. “Our success is a total team effort — from our employees and partners to the continued support of the Port community.”

Led by a five-member elected Board of Commissioners and CEO Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral is recognized as Florida’s Premier Seaport and the world’s second-busiest cruise port. Its diverse business portfolio spans cruise, cargo, recreation, and real estate, while supporting aerospace and commercial fishing industries.

Port Canaveral handles 8.6 million cruise passenger movements and 6.1 million tons of cargo annually, reinforcing its position as a dynamic hub for tourism and trade.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC) announced that Satys, a global leader in aircraft and rail painting, has expanded its North American operations to Brevard County, bringing a $1.5 million capital investment and 40 high-wage jobs to the region.

Known for its slogan, “Satisfaction starts with Satys,” the French industrial and international group selected Florida’s Space Coast as part of its business development strategy in North America, strengthening ties with aerospace giants such as Dassault Aviation.

“The glidepath to Brevard’s aviation and aerospace hub landed Satys, a French industrial and international group, at the new Dassault MRO Facility,” said Lynda Weatherman, President and CEO of the EDC of Florida’s Space Coast.

“Satys introduces its state-of-the-art paint hangars with advanced technology, including remote-controlled gondolas and aircraft scanning for zero-impact. These capabilities will serve major U.S. and France-based aerospace players right here on the Space Coast.”

To help fill its new facility with skilled talent, the EDC partnered with CareerSource Brevard Flagler Volusia.

“The glidepath to Brevard’s aviation and aerospace hub landed Satys, a French industrial and international group, at the new Dassault MRO Facility,” said Lynda Weatherman, President and CEO of the EDC of Florida’s Space Coast.

Satys began hiring in the summer of 2025 and is now fully operational. The company is set to complete its first full aircraft service in November—marking the start of a new era of high-tech aerospace manufacturing in the region.

Satys’ arrival underscores the growing demand for advanced certification programs and specialized workforce development in Brevard County’s booming aerospace and aviation sector.

The company currently employs more than 2,600 people worldwide and has trained more than 500 aeronautical painters and sealers since 2023. By 2026, Satys plans to recruit an additional 200 employees in France alone, according to Business Aviation Services Editor Curt Epstein.

Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Blagnac, France, Satys operates in 13 countries across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, with 52 sites worldwide. Satys USA, established in 2017, has worked with major partners including Boeing and Dassault.

The expansion into Florida marks a significant milestone in the company’s North American growth strategy.

The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to attracting new businesses, expanding existing industries, and promoting economic growth across Brevard County.

The EDC advocates for policies that support high-tech industries, manufacturing, and military installations, working closely with local partners to strengthen the region’s reputation as a global hub for aerospace innovation.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Eastern Florida State College’s A.S. in Transportation and Logistics program develops students’ expertise in transportation systems, warehouse and inventory management, purchasing, regulatory compliance, operations, logistics technology, and global freight strategies.

Students also build professional skillsets such as critical thinking, project management, data analysis, and communication.

“This program is one of many fully online programs developed to meet the needs of working adults,” said Eastern Florida State College President Dr. Jim Richey. “It allows for greater flexibility in completing the program and sets our students up for success at the start.”

With two College Credit Certificates (Intermodal Freight Transportation and International Freight Transportation) built into the associate’s degree, the coursework complements industry-recognized certifications, such as Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, OSHA10/30-Hour Certifications, PMP, and Lean Logistics/Kaizen, which students are encouraged to pursue as they progress.

After completing the associate’s degree, students can advance to Eastern Florida State’s Bachelor of Applied Science degrees, including specializations in the Organizational Management program, which are designed explicitly for A.S. graduates who will complete additional general education requirements as part of their BAS program.

Living on Florida’s Space Coast, surrounded by ports, distribution hubs, and a growing aerospace corridor, Eastern Florida State College’s Dr. Deana Handfield Looney sees firsthand the pivotal role logistics plays in supporting both local and national economies.

“I’ve worked closely with industry partners, developed courses aligned with workforce needs, and watched students turn classroom knowledge into successful careers,” said Dr. Looney, who has been teaching future business professionals for almost 20 years.

“This program is one of many fully online programs developed to meet the needs of working adults,” said Eastern Florida State College President Dr. Jim Richey, above center. “It allows for greater flexibility in completing the program and sets our students up for success at the start.”

An Evolving Field

“In today’s world, logistics professionals are not just ‘moving boxes’; they’re designing systems, managing crises, and driving innovation,” said Dr. Looney.

With the continuous evolution of artificial intelligence and automation, coupled with green energy initiatives, the field of transportation and logistics is ripe for a new generation of future professionals.

More than working in a warehouse or driving a truck on the highway, these industry leaders will leverage business strategy and emerging technology to manage projects in sustainability, compliance, and analytics.

“Transportation and logistics aren’t one-size-fits-all,” said Dr. Looney. “Students can find work in industries they’re passionate about, whether that’s aerospace, humanitarian logistics, green transportation, defense contracting, or e-commerce.”

She advises students to stay informed about emerging trends, especially related to sustainability, automation, and global trade, in order to position themselves for long-term success.

Dr. Deana Handfield Looney, Eastern Florida State College Instructor in the Business Department, specializing in Transportation & Logistics, said, “In today’s world, logistics professionals are not just ‘moving boxes’; they’re designing systems, managing crises, and driving innovation.”

A Foundation for Variety and Advancement

Eastern Florida State College’s A.S. in Transportation and Logistics provides a strong foundation for a diverse student population, from recent graduates to career professionals.

Vicki Perry has worked in the field for over 30 years, employed by the City of Titusville’s Water Department’s Field Operations as a Logistics Coordinator Tech. Encouraged by her son, who is currently enrolled at Eastern Florida State College, she decided to return to college herself.

“I realized that I would never rise in the field unless I had a degree,” said Perry, who is taking courses online.

In addition to teaching subjects such as process improvement, data analysis, and supply chain management, the program prepares students to become future leaders by providing a big-picture view of the logistics workplace environment and culture.

“One thing that has helped me tremendously is being able to look at a process and identify ways to make it more efficient and flow better,” said Perry. “It has also helped me strengthen my leadership and teamwork skills, since many assignments involve collaboration and real-world problem solving.”

Impacting the Space Coast – and Beyond

Graduates of the A.S. Transportation and Logistics program enter rewarding careers across the state of Florida, including with defense and aerospace companies, import/export operations at Port Canaveral, and large 3PL firms coordinating regional freight networks.

“Because Brevard County is home to Port Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center, major aerospace firms, and a growing network of manufacturing and distribution companies, the demand for skilled logistics professionals continues to rise,” said Dr. Looney.

Students can expect a career path with strong potential for advancement, paired with the flexibility to work locally, nationally, or even globally.

Dr. Looney reflected on the variety of student success stories that have come through the program.

“One graduate started in dispatch for a regional carrier and quickly advanced to operations coordination, managing logistics across several states. Another alum moved into international compliance, leading a team responsible for ensuring shipments meet complex regulatory standards.”

Eastern Florida State College’s A.S. in Transportation & Logistics

The 2-year Transportation and Logistics program accepts applications on an ongoing basis, allowing students to begin classes at their convenience throughout the College’s terms.

Courses are offered 100% online, with some technical electives and general education courses also available face-to-face, providing greater flexibility. An optional service-learning field study provides students with the opportunity to put theory into practice while earning college credit.

Graduates often enter the field in roles such as Inventory Control Specialists and Transportation Dispatchers before advancing to supervisory and coordinator positions.

Obtaining additional certifications and gaining entry-level experience may eventually lead to annual salaries ranging from $70,000 to over $100,000, depending on the sector.

Eastern Florida State’s Transportation and Logistics program prepares students to play an essential role in ports, railways, trucking, and air cargo operations.

With specialized instruction that readies students for industry certifications and licenses, opportunities for hands-on field experiences, and seamless integration into Eastern Florida State’s BAS in Organizational Management for further advancement, Eastern Florida State College equips graduates with the training needed to thrive in the Space Coast’s dynamic transportation and logistics sector — and beyond.
