BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Police Department has honored Communications Officer Brooke Shaffroth with a Certificate of Commendation for her exemplary performance during multiple critical incidents on September 3, 2025.

MPD officials said Shaffroth demonstrated exceptional professionalism, maintaining calm and composure while coordinating responses in a high-pressure situation.

“Her quick thinking ensured seamless communication among first responders and contributed to the safety and effectiveness of the department’s efforts during a challenging series of events,” said a MPD spokesperson.

The department praised her dedication to duty and highlighted that her actions reflect great credit upon herself and the Melbourne Police Department.

“Her commitment to excellence continues to set a strong example for her colleagues and the community she serves,” said a MPD spokesperson.

The Melbourne Police Department has 176 sworn officers and 72 civilian staff, supported by a team of commanders and specialized units. The city is divided into ten patrol zones spread across two major districts — north and south — allowing officers to develop stronger local connections and focus on neighborhood-specific concerns.

The agency’s organizational structure is divided into the Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Support Services, and Community Services divisions.

■ The Patrol Division serves as the backbone of the department, providing 24-hour response to emergencies, conducting traffic enforcement, and operating the city’s K-9 unit.

■ The Criminal Investigations Division handles complex cases involving major felonies, narcotics, and vice crimes, while the Support Services Division oversees recruiting, training, records, and technology systems that keep daily operations running efficiently.

■ The Community Services Division focuses on outreach, traffic safety, and school resource programs, reflecting the department’s commitment to engagement and education.

Several specialized units enhance the department’s capability to respond to unique challenges.

These include the SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Unit, Marine Patrol, and Dive Rescue Team, each equipped for high-risk, specialized, or waterborne operations. Together, these units provide comprehensive coverage across land and waterways, ensuring readiness for any public safety situation.

The department operates out of the Joseph Pellicano Law Enforcement Center, a modern facility designed for efficiency, resilience, and community accessibility. The building includes secure evidence storage, improved victim-support spaces, and dedicated areas for specialized training and operations.

The department has invested in technology and community communication, launching a mobile app to provide public safety updates, crime alerts, and opportunities for citizen feedback.
