BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – An afternoon drive turned into a heartwarming rescue mission for members of Brevard County Fire Rescue’s Fire Prevention office, who helped bring a runaway dog named Penny safely back home.

While traveling along I-95, Assistant Fire Marshal Brian and Fire Inspector Warren noticed an energetic pup running dangerously close to traffic.

After several attempts to safely approach her, the team managed to contact Penny’s owner through Facebook. With the help of several good Samaritans who stopped to assist, the group successfully corralled the frightened dog.

Once Penny was safely in their care, the firefighters gave her and her relieved owner a ride home. According to the owner, Penny had escaped around 1:00 a.m. Thursday and had been on the run for more than 13 hours before her rescue.

Thanks to the teamwork of the Fire Prevention crew and local residents, Penny is now home, safe and sound, and enjoying a well-deserved nap after her long adventure.
