BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – A golden milestone in Brevard County high school sports was reached recently when Merritt Island High School volleyball coach Angie Patrick celebrated her 500th career win — a feat more than two decades in the making.
Patrick, who has led the Mustangs program for 23 seasons, achieved the milestone after Merritt Island swept Bishop Moore 3–0. The victory marked not just another win on the scoreboard but the continuation of a legacy defined by excellence, mentorship, and family.
“Congratulations, Coach Angie Patrick, on your 500th win,” Merritt Island High School said in a statement. “Your 23 years of coaching have impacted hundreds of Mustangs and the surrounding community. An amazing accomplishment!”

A Tradition of Excellence
Since taking the helm, Patrick has transformed the Merritt Island volleyball program into one of Florida’s most respected.
Under her leadership, the Mustangs have compiled a 500–133 record, including 17 Cape Coast Conference championships, 20 consecutive district titles, eight Final Four appearances, state championships in 2011 and 2018, and three state runner-up finishes in 2012, 2014 and 2021.
But those who’ve played under Patrick say her influence goes far beyond the court. Her players often speak of her as a mentor, teacher, and role model — someone who teaches not just volleyball, but resilience, respect, and teamwork.
“Our volleyball program is unlike any other,” Patrick has often said. “We are a family bonded together by our love for the sport. We have an outstanding coaching staff, dedicated players, and an enthusiastic fan crowd. Merritt Island Volleyball has many accomplishments because of their hard work, dedication, respect, and love for the game.”

From Wisconsin to the Space Coast
Patrick’s journey to the top of Florida high school volleyball began far from the Space Coast. Growing up in Wisconsin, she initially broke her father’s heart by choosing volleyball over basketball — a tough pill for a former Wisconsin Badger who the NBA had drafted.
“He eventually forgave me when he saw how much I loved the game,” Patrick said with a laugh.
Her passion blossomed in high school, where she led Pacelli High School in Stevens Point to a state championship her senior year. That success earned her a scholarship to Florida Tech, where she starred as an outside hitter and was named the school’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a sophomore.
It was at Florida Tech where she met her husband, then a pitcher on the baseball team. The couple shares a love for both athletics and family, with their son, Shane, having played baseball at Merritt Island High and now at Eastern Florida State College, and their daughter, Jordyn, who starred for her mom from 2018 to 2021, and is now the head coach of the Mustangs’ freshman volleyball team.

Building the Mustang Dynasty
Patrick joined Merritt Island High School after a stint as an assistant coach at Embry-Riddle University. She also teaches marine science and biology at MIHS — a role that blends her academic passion with her coaching career.
“I love the ocean and teaching marine science,” Patrick said. “Being at Merritt Island lets me share both my passions — volleyball and marine biology — with students every day.”
Her first season was anything but glamorous.
“I remember my very first open gym,” Patrick recalled. “It was in a hot, non-air-conditioned gym, and I was sick from being pregnant with my first child. It wasn’t a successful season, but it was the start of everything we’ve built. Those early girls laid the foundation for our success.”
More than two decades later, the foundation has become a powerhouse. Merritt Island volleyball is now synonymous with discipline, teamwork, and winning.
